    Talk to a professional first

Before starting pickleball or any new physical activity, check with your doctor, especially if you:

    • Have a heart, lung, or blood pressure condition.
    • Have joint, back, or balance problems, or a past injury.
    • Are pregnant, recovering from surgery, or taking medication that affects balance or heart rate.
    • Have not exercised regularly for a while.

    Common risks

Like any sport, pickleball carries a risk of injury. The most common include sprains and strains, falls, tennis or pickleball elbow, and eye injuries from a fast moving ball. Heat related illness is also a risk when playing outdoors in hot weather.

    How to play more safely

    • Warm up for several minutes with light movement and easy dinking before playing points.
    • Wear court shoes designed for side to side movement, not running shoes.
    • Protect your eyes with sports glasses, especially when playing at the net.
    • Do not backpedal for lobs. Turn sideways and shuffle or let the ball go. Backward falls are a leading cause of serious pickleball injuries.
    • Stay hydrated and take breaks, and use sun protection when playing outside.
    • Check the court for water, debris, loose balls, and uneven surfaces before you play.
    • Stop if something hurts. Pain, dizziness, chest pain, or shortness of breath are signs to stop right away and seek medical help if needed.

    Drills and techniques

Our tutorials and drills describe common techniques used by recreational players. Everyone's body and fitness level is different. Adapt any drill to your own ability, and stop any movement that causes pain.

    Gear and products

Our gear guides are based on product specifications and player feedback. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, check that equipment is in good condition, and set up nets and other gear securely before use.
